SPORTS BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY
The global sports sector is estimated to be worth nearly $700 billion USD making it one of the world’s largest industries in terms of revenues and employment. In India, the business of sport has grown extensively and is now a $3.5 billion USD industry.
The country has been host to international mega-events such as the Commonwealth Games, ICC World Cup, FIFA U-17 World Cup and Hockey World Cup which has positioned India as a sporting destination in addition to generating global awareness around Indian athletes and investment opportunities within Indian sport.
More importantly though, over the past decade India has moved from being a single sport nation to a multi-sport country and is witnessing an unprecedented boom that has completely transformed the Indian sports landscape.
The recent launch of new initiatives such as the Indian Super League, Hockey India League, Indian Badminton League, Pro Kabaddi League, Tennis Premier League, Prime Volleyball League and Ultimate Table Tennis League are changing the face of Indian sports and creating a number of employment opportunities across the sector.
The emergence of sporting icons and heroes such as Mithali Raj, Sunil Chettri, Rahul Bheke, Jehan Daruvala, PV Sindhu, Mary Kom, and Hima Das shows that India is moving beyond the realm of cricket icons of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and moving from a single sport nation to a multi-sport nation.
Sports movements backed by the government such as Fit India & Khelo India are generating awareness and improving the general acumen towards sports and fitness.
Growth in the digital space in sport in the form of E-sports, fantasy sports, and gaming is expanding the sports ecosystem canvas (MPL, Dream 11, My Circle 11, Hala Play, etc) creating a larger footprint.
The rapid expansion of the Indian sports landscape has created a demand for quality sports management professionals to fill available positions and build the case for new roles to be established. The days when sports organizations were primarily looking to hire someone who only played sports at a high level are in the past, what is now required are qualified professionals that have an understanding of the business of sport and are able to combine their knowledge with their passion in order to contribute to the industry’s long-term growth.
